The North Carolina Expo is a 50-foot long tractor trailer that is operated by the North Carolina Governor's Highway Safety Program directed by Don Nail. It contains animatronics, drunk driving simulators and other safety displays. Since its construction in 1992, it has had more than 20-million visitors. This past summer it was completely redone and now includes 5 interactive Touch & Go kiosks exhibiting a six-part, game-like multimedia tour of North Carolina highway safety issues. It was premiered at the NC State Fair in Raleigh Oct. 12 - 21, 2001.
We built the multi-media presentation using HTML and Macromedia Flash. The script was developed in co-operation with Jill Lucas, Public Information Officer. Through a 6-minute interactive presentation, visitors travel along with a North Carolina family on vacation. By touching the screen the visitor can choose the safe alternative in each situation. They are told whether they have made the safe choice or not, and why, in a 30-second film. In addition to the five kiosks with sound domes built into the ceiling, 14 back-lighted signs both illuminate the area and provide additional visual experiences. The whole room was redone to look like asphalt pavement including formica on the walls with yellow road striping, and gray inlay carpet on the floor to look like a parking lot. Gayle Buchler directs the Exposition as it visits many locations across North Carolina.
